Remodeling Round Up...Sorta

Yeehaw y'all, it's time for Remodeling Guy's Remodeling Round Up!
I cannot take any credit for what you are about to see.

My beloved hubby has been the busy beaver on this project.

He has turned it from ugly, unfunctional, wasted space into....
A room.

More specifically, it will be our family/schoolroom.

He is amazing! (Uh..no I don't have him sleeping out there. We just moved the spare bed from the music room. Where it was serving as a low couch. Oh yes, we are creative. It will probably serve the same purpose in its new home.)

And he is driven. He has gotten this far in a little over a month. He has done everything except some of the electrical and some of the drywall hanging. Why suffer (possibly maim yourself or blow up your house) when you have a neighbor who is a professional electrician? Why torture yourself (with a pitiful drill) when you have friends who hang drywall for a living (and who brought their totally awesome tools of the trade)?

No, we haven't started painting yet. That will be my contribution. This green is just leftovers from a fit of insanity I had after looking at the dirty, disgusting garage wall that used to be there.

My man knows how to bust out a room! I can't wait for the finished result. But alas, I will have to show that off at a later time because I can't make him work any faster.
What, did you think I was a slave driver?
Git along little doggie.. (how would you spell that anyway?)

WFMW: Not Brushing My Kids Teeth

Okay, before you call child services on me, hear me out!

How many of you ladies like to sit there and watch your children like a hawk while they brush? I thought as much. None of us like to do it and it hardly yields satisfying results..at least in my household it doesn't. Often I end up brushing the child's teeth myself. Which, the whole idea is to encourage good hygiene and taking care of one's body...not having Mom do it all the time.

However, neither do I want my children's teeth rotting out of their heads. What is a mother to do?

Enlist the help of a sibling! I have my sons brush the sides of each other's teeth to get those hard to reach areas. They have fun and keep their teeth sparkling. There is also the competition factor about whose teeth are actually cleaner...more motivating than a trip to the dentist! :)

Not brushing my kids' teeth works for me!

Found In Our Front Yard...

Look at this fellow..isn't his coloring spectacular?

Here's another show stopper!

And look what I managed to capture...a humming bird! We actually have a pair that visit our tree now. I imagine that a nest is nearby.

Just a few of our feathered friends that visited today.

What Is It...Revealed!

In a fit of boredom late one night this weekend, I decided to create something.
My son said it was outerspace.
It was a happy accident.
It took three redos of the G to get to this.

And then I splopped paint...aaaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhh.

Which I then decided looked pretty cool and so I did it some more.

Thinking outside of the box.
Free paint and canvas.
Equals one priceless work of art.

Unique and a bit funky. Just like me!

I'll give you the full reveal tomorrow!

Learning About Nothing

We read this book last week for math.
Surprisingly enough, it was my Mr. Independent who grasped the concept of zero the best. This is a really fun book and obviously the littlest one enjoyed it too!

Walking In My Footsteps

Or at least my high heels...
Girls are so different than boys...my boys never did this with my shoes...only Daddy's.
She takes my shoes out of my closet to play in them. Who needs dress up stuff when you can raid Mommy's closet?

Perfectly coordinated.

Got Hope?

Don't miss it!

Tonight Dave Ramsey rolls out Town Hall for Hope! Be there!

Frugal Friday:: Are You Loaning the IRS Money?

I have always wanted to participate in Frugal Friday, but never really felt like I had much to contribute despite the frugal lifestyle we lead. Until now :)

Did you get a good-sized refund at tax time? Did you ever stop to think about how much money that could mean for your checkbook monthly?

After listening to Dave Ramsey (if you don't know who he is check out the link!) I did the math.

Our $4,000 refund would translate into $333 a month! But how do you get that money upfront rather than loaning it to the IRS so they benefit from the interest earned?

Adjust your withholding allowances on your W-4!

DISCLAIMER: I am not, nor have I ever claimed to be, a tax professional. I do not know what your individual situation is and if you need to, please seek the advice of a competent tax professional.

You can go to the IRS website and use their extremely complicated and lengthy calculator to help you figure out the proper amount of exemptions, or you can use the ever-so-simple calculator from Kiplinger.com to figure it out.

Does the thought of tinkering with your withholding scare you? I sure was a bit reluctant! Until I decided that the extra $300 we got would go into a savings account. (We have been very happy with INGDirect.com ) If our withholding calculations are off, we'll have what we need to pay the IRS! If we aren't wrong and we still get a minimal refund, we've just saved $4,000!

Don't loan the government money interest-free...earn the interest yourself!

Most people don't think of adjusting their withholding except for when job changes occur or members are added to the family. However, upon perusal of the W-4 form, the IRS states:
"Consider completing a new Form W-4 each year and when your personal or financial situation changes." (Emphasis mine)

I think that's good advice! :)

I'm A Meal Planning Failure

I have tried every meal planning method possible.

I have spent hours poring over sales flyers, coupons and recipe books.

In theory, meal planning is a fabulous idea.

In our household reality, not so much.

First off, my husband dislikes leftovers. And sandwiches. What did I grow up eating? Leftovers and sandwiches. My mom was a whiz at making a little bit of money s-t-r-e-t-c-h a LONG ways. Purposely creating leftovers helped her do that. So that is what I learned. But what I learned is not serving me well today.

Secondly, two days out of the week my husband goes to school in the evenings and doesn't come home for dinner. So I have to make sure that his lunch will last him all day long. When I calculate it out, I am preparing 25 meals a week.

No wonder I am exhausted! And frustrated!

Lastly, we have some picky eaters in our midst. I won't name names, but it can be challenging to cater to certain palates. And, I am not an adventurous eater. My husband, he thrives on adventure!

He doesn't consider lentils or split pea soup to be adventurous.

Sigh.

Can you see my dilemma now? I want to reap the benefits of menu planning, but I have no idea how to make it fit my family.

Did any of you ladies get a big fat 'F' in meal planning? How do you deal with the need for variety among discerning palates? How do you incorporate specific needs/wants of certain family members without losing your mind?

Delicious Deals!

Today I went to Kohls to peruse the sales. I had what I thought was $20 Kohls Cash burning a hole in my pocket. Here's the breakdown of what I purchased:
Adorable pink shirt--originally $12.00, marked down to $4.80!
So cute flowered skirt with built in bottom--originally $10.00 but today it was buy one get one free! I bought a cute purple flowered skirt as well :)
Sweet pale yellow linen/cotton blend sundress--originally $20, marked down to $8.00!
Deliciously adorable strawberry adorned gingham check dress--originally $18.00, marked down to $10.80

So, I purchased $70 worth of clothes for my cute-as-a-bug daughter for only.....

Are you ready for this?

I almost screamed in the store...

$3.60

I waited for her to say "Oops, my mistake.."

But she didn't.

Apparently one of the Kohls Cash coupons was good for $20 instead of just $10!

I walked out with all those adorable outfits for a grand total of $3.60!

The Other Side of Staying At Home

Recently I read two blog posts that were inspired by a show done on Oprah. Apparently this show decided to show the real life of a SAHM.

What was really sad is that both of the bloggers focused on the negative side.

Admittedly, yes, there are those days or even weeks when you feel like if you have to pick up one more cheerio or say "Go clean your room" one more time, you...will...lose...your...mind. Oh, I'm not denying the days when it feels like the children are going to pull you apart with the "mommy, mommy, mommy"s.

But what about the benefits of staying at home? Are there none? Do we do this to torture ourselves with unending housework and obnoxious, ungrateful children? Do we "chain" ourselves to our homes because we prefer martyrdom?

NO!

Then why do I stay at home?

When I was working part-time and my husband worked full-time, we were on such a tight schedule (He worked from 7:30am until 4pm and then we would meet at my workplace at 4:30pm, switch cars, talk for 15 minutes and then I would head into my building to work from 5pm-11pm, arriving at home at 11:30pm where he would often be asleep because he had to get up at 6am.) to avoid putting our children in daycare, that we saw very little of each other. Our marriage felt non-existent and we truly felt like roommates rather than lifemates. My primary reason for staying at home was to reconnect with my husband. I love being home when he comes home, greeting him with a kiss and a cup of coffee. I love creating a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere here that causes him to shed any worries or concerns at the door. It makes me so thankful when the kids come running and screaming "Daddy's home!" as they hear the key turn in the lock at 4:30pm. And I know he loves it too.

Another obvious reason is, of course, seeing our children. When I was working, I didn't have much energy for interacting, creating or patience. I feel like those years, my boys got the leftovers of mommy. Whereas now, I can take the time to admire a picture drawn or a job well done. I have the luxury of being present, fully present, to watch tender affections between my sons and daughter. I get to experience the joy of watching them grow in their relationship and knowledge of God. I finally get to be a full-time mom.

Being a SAHM saves my family money. This was not a by-product of stepping out of the rat race that I had ever considered before. I knew quitting my job would cost us income, but I never dreamed that being a home manager meant that I would be able to cut costs so effectively that I, in essence, create income. I treat it like a job, devoting whatever hours and energy are necessary to reach the end goal---having money leftover between paychecks. It has become a personal hobby...one that saves me money rather than causing me to spend money. I don't scrapbook..I coupon!

Creating order in my home is something I am still working on. For some reason I didn't magically get the Suzie Q Homemaker gene when I joined the association. Sigh. My goal is to get to the point where my husband doesn't have to ask if he has clean socks and I don't have to go pull a pair out of the dryer... I am striving toward creating more healthy and frugal meals that everyone loves. Split pea soup is something only I like, so scratch that off the meal list! Learning new ways to be frugal is now a fun way to pass the time. I have exchanged my fabric softener for vinegar, my dishwashing detergent for washing soda, my disinfectant for rubbing alcohol and my house has never sparkled more! Before I started on this journey to frugality, I didn't know you could make your own laundry soap or cleaners! It never occured to me that years ago people did that sort of thing. Being able to stay at home has made me a more creative person.

And, lastly, and most selfishly, I stay at home for me. I was never cut out for the cutthroat environment of the corporate world. I prefer a place where my only competition is the dryer and that pile of dirty clothes. I may not get a paycheck or health benefits, but how can I place a dollar value on my family's appreciation of me or number the advantages to my family and me to have someone keeping the home full time? The answer, in short, there is no monetary value that I can place on my family's peace.

My marriage has improved. My kids are better behaved. My home runs smoother. I am having more fun being a home manager than I EVER did as an administrative assistant!

Yes, being a SAHM does come with its daily challenges. But let's not lose sight of why we do it. We create our family and the environment in which that family will wither or thrive. We are keepers of the home....guardians.

Why do you do it?

Working Up Some Whimsy

Mrs. Devine asked how you create whimsy at your house on her blog Devine Home. Here I share my little bit of whimsy...

Up front I apologize for the terrible photo quality...I had to use it with flash off and it is hard to keep perfectly still to avoid blurring!I

I create whimsy with my children!

What better way to capture those precious faces?

And display those smirky grins?

All the photos except for this one were candids..I have a REALLY hard time getting a candid out of this handsome guy, he loves to pose!

Oh, and total cost for these photos?

$15.96

How to get studio quality looking photos without the studio price?

Go to your local craft store (mine is Michael's) and get the pre-matted black frames (got mine on sale for $3.99 each!). Then take fun pictures of your kids, choose your favorites, use Picasa to make them black and white, print off on photo quality paper (or regular...doesn't really seem to make a difference...one of those photos is photo quality paper and the rest are plain old paper), slap the photo in the frame and hang. Enjoy!

Perfection

Seven. The number of perfection.

That's how many years Mr. Querido and I have been married on this day.

It seems so short and yet feels like we have been together forever already.

We have been through so many ups and downs and the loops that life has thrown at us. But we have been through them together, side by side. Partners...for life.

Our marriage motto is: We are committed to being committed even if it gets us committed! And so, yes, there are the days wherein we drive each other crazy with our oppositeness, but we are committed to the covenant relationship we entered into seven years ago.

We got married at a courthouse with a justice of the peace. That type of marriage "ceremony" is all about efficiency and the romance is lost amidst the officiality of it all. We didn't even get to say our vows. Just sign on the dotted line.

As I think back to that day, I have to laugh at how I had no idea what I was getting myself into! But I am so glad I glad that I got into it!

I love him for everything he is and does. And I can truly say that I love him more today than I did on the day I became his wife.

So today we celebrate being perfected in Christ as a couple. And we eagerly anticipate with joy the perfecting process as we are molded, side by side, into holy vessels by the Potter's hands.

Happy Anniversary to us!

Passing Out

Last night, we went to our local home improvement store to get some more items for the family room remodel. While standing and chatting with the cashier, I got the distinct feeling that I should invite her to our womens' conference that is coming up.

But I didn't.

Instead I rationalized those feelings away:

"She's probably working that day."

"She's probably not interested."

"She probably will get offended if I ask."

And so I smiled and wished her a good day and left. And kicked myself all the way home.

I had missed my chance. I had squandered my opportunity.

What was I so afraid of? What is the absolute worst thing that could happen if I were to invite someone to my church function?

So what if she were to get offended. Her reaction wouldn't be based on something I said but rather something she felt.

Am I afraid of being held responsible for her reaction?

How ridiculous is that?!

When does God ever hold us responsible for others' actions? No, He only holds me accountable to my own actions.

So, with new resolve and deeper insight into why I chickened out so miserably, I humbly ask His forgiveness for not obeying His quiet proddings. And knowing that He does forgive my failings, and that He will give me a second chance to make a difference in someone's life.

So rather than passing the next lady by, I am going to pass out what I have to give.

And I will leave you with a fun video my church made for the event...

Loaded!

"Blessed be the Lord Who
daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation."

Psalm 68:19

Rather than being burdened with the daily cares, I choose to be stuffed full of the blessings he has for me.

As I was sitting at my sewing machine yesterday and watching my children playing outside, I was overcome with a wave of thankfulness. I am so grateful that I am home to watch my sons lovingly play with their sister. I am so thankful that God gave us a house with a backyard that was the perfect size for their adventures. I am so grateful that we chose to step out in faith and have me stay at home even though the numbers didn't make sense financially. I am so thankful for a husband who saw the value of me being a stay at home mom. I am so grateful that God has proven Himself faithful to the promises He gave in His Word.

He does load me with benefits, daily, I just have to be aware of them because sometimes they are little blessings piled one on the other. And the benefits can get lost amidst the everydayness of my responsibilities.

But, it is also up to me how I perceive the benefits.

Having loads of laundry to do is a benefit. It means that I have a healthy family who wears clothing that God has provided for us. It means that I have electricity to run my washer and dryer. It means that I have two hands that function, with which to fold the laundry.

What about dishes? Once again, I have a family that is healthy and requires dishes to eat off of. Once again, God has provided us with delicious food. I have running water to rinse the dishes with and I have electricity to use my dishwasher. I have a dishwasher instead of having to do it all by hand! I have legs and feet so I can stand and pre-wash my dishes at my sink.

You know what I discovered this week? That when I choose to perceive my benefits in the light of gratitude, the myriad of chores that befall me as family manager don't seem quite so overwhelming. In fact, I might even learn to love laundry, or dishes, just because it means I can stop and give thanks for the blessings He has bestowed on me.

Don't Leave Me Hanging!

(Warning: Rant Ahead)

Today, I got another one of those automated calls.

You know the ones "This is your last chance to lower the rate on your credit card. We've attempted to contact you previously..blah-blah-blah..."

In the past I would try to connect with a real person and ask to be removed from their call list. I would get hung up on. This has happened approximately five times.

So today, when I pushed the button for customer service, I played along.

"Hello. This is Kenneth in Guest Services. How can I help you today?"

"Um. I got a call from you guys saying I could lower the rate on my credit card."

"Why yes ma'am. That's true! I just need to verify your identity." He proceeds to tell me my name (Another rant for another time...WHO sends them my information????) and asks me to verify. I tell him "I don't have any credit cards." He says, "So that's your last name "Idonthavenaycreditcards?"

Can you believe he talked to a customer like that?

Because he got belligerent and smart-alecky I asked to speak with a manager. Here are his exact words:

"Well okay, but I can wait just as long as you can."

We'll see about that.

Ten minutes goes by. Fifteen. I tell him all I want to do is be removed from their call list and that I have been hung up on in the past and I am really irritated with their sales practices. He tells me that I have to verify my identity. I tell him I have no idea who THEY are and I won't, and is the manager still busy?

"I'm not going to hold my breath because I could die before the manager gets over here." He retorts.

((Click))

Wait, did he just hang up on me?!

I hope I obliterated his handle time.

(For those of you who haven't worked in a call center, the handle time is the length of time that you spend on a phone with a customer. In call centers you have to keep it low to meet performance expectations.)

I think the next time I am going to tell them that they haven't reached so-and-so but I would love see if I could lower the rate. I think I am going to think up a psuedonym and use up their precious handle time and resources. I am tired of getting bombarded by calls WHEN I DON'T EVEN HAVE A CREDIT CARD.

Oh and to just add to the extreme annoyance, those calls always come up "Unknown Number, Unknown Name" on my caller ID. So I can't even figure out who the company is!

One time when I was younger, telemarketers kept calling the house. My mom, sister and I were so tired of getting up to answer the phone and have it be a telemarketer trying to sell us something we didn't want or need. So I told my family that the next time I answered and it was a telemarketer, I was going to scream. (Most people mean it figuratively, I was so fed up I meant it literally!) The phone rang again, and you guessed it, it was a telemarketer. Well, this poor telemarketer heard the most blood-curdling scream on the line and then I hung up. We didn't get any more calls!

Maybe I should try that strategy again....

Perhaps, if the notation next to my name read : "Wacko. Don't waste your time!", I would have less annoying calls to deal with.

What would you do?

More Birds!

Here are some more feathered friends we happened upon around our town...

Canadian Goose. Lingering on the lake behind our local library was this laid-back lounger.
They are so peaceful to watch as they float serenely on the surface of the water.

Female Lesser Scaup. She was the prettiest female we saw there. Again, notice the detail God put into those tiny, ornate feathers on her back! Aren't her yellow eyes striking?

Male American Goldfinch. I'm not entirely sure we got this classification correct. During this time of year, many birds are shedding their winter feathers and they can appear to be an entirely different species altogether. It takes an experienced birdwatcher (which we are just novices) to discern the nuances. But this was our best guess based on what we could find.

Male and Female Mallard. I learned something new in our bird studies about this species. I always thought that "mallard" was the term that was used for the male duck not a species unto itself! Well, these are mallards, characterized by the male's beautiful green head. As with most pairs, the female is more sedate in her plumage in order to blend in with her surroundings better as she raises her family.

One fun thing that we have in our neck of the woods is a wetlands preserve! Also, on Wednesdays from 12-1p they have a fun FREE event called "Lunch with the Birds." We get to congregate at a viewing shelter to observe the natural wildlife from a safe, non-intrusive distance using binoculars. They even have some high powered spotting scopes trained on a bald eagle's nest! The best part is their is an experienced orinthologist who heads it up, so you can ask questions and get them answered! The kids had a blast and we look forward to going back often to observe the change in the wildlife throughout the seasons.
