Getting Ready...

Lately, in the blogosphere, I have been seeing references to emergency stashes of food and supplies. And for some reason, I have been coming across this topic more and more frequently. It has gotten me to thinking about how prepared my family is for an emergency...

We wouldn't even last a week based on what we have now. Because, I don't even have emergency rations! We have no way to maintain clean drinking water. Certainly don't have an adequate supply of food. Not anywhere near enough blankets for a family of five. Heck, we don't even own a tent!

For some reason, I sense an urgency to prepare. Not sure why God is talking to me about this. But I need to obey. April is going to be my month to take stock of what we do have and get what we need.

I remember reading a fictional novel called "Night Light" (I cannot remember the author's name) which is basically about what a family does to survive when a star supernovas and knocks out everything that runs on electricity. The community is brought to its knees until people start getting resourceful. They become self-sustaining and grow closer.

How much knowledge of living off of the land have we lost in our McDonald's world?

My husband was just reading an article about stocking up on supplies too. We camp, so we do have all those types of supplies. I am sure you could purchase these things at yard sales. I always see camping gear for sale. For blankets, I would try a thrift store, they always have a great supply. You can just wash them on hot with a little bleach if you are worried about germs. As for food. I would stock up on canned and dry goods. They are pretty inexpensive and things like beans are high protein and low cost. All you need is a can opener.
Hope that helps!

I'm one of those crazy Mormons with a years supply of food in her garage. I'm sure I'll eat all the cake mixes and junk stuff first, but if worse comes to worse--it's nice to know I can grind wheat and bake bread and survive for (hopefully!) a year. There is some peace in that, but if you decide to stock up on supplies--just do it gradually (i.e. buying two of what you normally use), and find a place for it. If nothing else, it can actually cut down on your grocery bill in the end.

Hmmmm...this is probably more than you wanted to know, right :)?!
